How to Dreadlock Fine Hair

Print this articleMaking dreadlocks on fine hair requires a slightly different technique than for thick hair. But regardless of the type of hair you have, you need to commit to about four to eight hours to complete the process. Dreading hair is much easier if you have someone do it for you, as it is nearly impossible to get enough grip on the hairs at the back of your head for a necessary palm roll. In addition, your hair needs to be at least 3 inches long for dreading.

Wash your hair thoroughly, and then towel-dry. Braid your hair, and then take out the braids when the hair is completely dry. Make your hair as frizzy as possible by combing it many times.

2

Divide the hair into sections starting at the bottom. Thinner hair needs thin sections, about 1-inch squared. Designate the bottom back inch by clipping the rest of the hair away.

3

Back-comb the hair by grabbing the hair and pushing the back every few inches with the comb to make the hair very frizzy.

4

Rub dreading wax into your fingers. Massage it at the root of the dread, and then twist the hair.

5

Roll the dread in your palms to develop a dreadlock shape. Pull the ends of the straight hair to close off the end of the dread.

6

Divide the next 1-inch section, and repeat the backcombing and waxing process. Work your way to the top-front of the head.

Tips & Warnings

Rewax the dreads about twice per week for the first two to six months after you get the locks. Do this by applying dread wax to your hair.

Only apply wax to dry hair.
